I’m addicted to New Thoughts.

After reading 10% of both Bill’s and Chuck’s new books (first and last 10% respectively), I’ve arrived at the unfair decision that EtD will be much more significant. But they do represent the intersection of the majority of my interests in life.

After hearing Chuck talk at length on Bill’s podcasts, I can’t help but hear his self-assured voice whenever he italicizes words. That’s a first.

Bill has a footnote about not hooking up at prom and wishing he had skipped that to go to some epic Celtics playoff game. It seems so very strange that he can relate these very personal stories about watching pro basketball and seems content to write about his senior prom so sparingly. I guess that part of his appeal, that he reveals enough about himself to be relatable but not enough to become the focus of his writing.

“People who know the truth, yet still refuse to accept what they know to be true” might be a great description of internet people.

I read the Unabomber’s manifesto my freshman year for a class called Self, Society, and Technology. I remember thinking that it made compelling arguments but not much more than that. I also remember writing an essay about how we expressed ourselves through technology. This was 2001. I struggled for an answer. What a ridiculous question that would be eight years later.

If I were an author trying to make it, there’s no question writing a Fantasy Epic would be the way to go. It would be so easy. 1. Read all the major series. Note their flaws. 2. Rewrite them with the audience in mind (allow for the reader to easily adopt the role of the main character, bildungsroman, prevent Harry Potter comparisons). I mean most of them are so so bad but incredibly enjoyable. And there seems to be a lack of new series. Fuck having a grand plan written out, once you get people addicted to the first book, you’re set (see:). And they’d be really fun (easy) to write.

I need to see all of Herzog’s movies.

Portage is the adjoining sister city to Kalamazoo. They’re separated by I-94. They’re distinctly different. Kalamazoo is old leafy neighborhoods, vacant factories, black people, college kids, Bell’s Beer, empty downtown streets, hilly graveyards. Portage is modern industrial parks, strip malls, long stop lights, Best Buy, sprawling suburbs, good schools, baby strollers, SUVs. I was reading about the self-hating Modern Leftists in a crowded (mostly by families) Barnes & Noble in Portage. I started thinking about the elitist remark Katie linked to. The person who wrote that was most certainly hated himself and all these Middle America Palin lovers walking their kids around most certainly do not hate themselves. They don’t. It might explain a lot.

The paragraph above where Klosterman writes the sentence “I love the internet.” twice (the second in his sneering italics), he explains that instead of doing some real shit, he’s sitting around reading about Animal Collective. He notes that the content isn’t important or amusing or well-written. It’s possible that he wrote this part of the book around January of this year. I’d bet he’s referencing HRO. He’s got to be, right? The final cultural reference he brings out in what might be his best essay is a knock on that post. Seems funny.

I should transcribe that entire chapter onto my tumblr. Mad tumblarity.

I’m pretty sure taking generic brand men’s daily multivitamin dietary supplement has cured my depression. That wasn’t actually a thought, just an overshare.

As I was leaving, I noticed a crowd around the coffee shop. Kinetic Affect, a local spoken word outfit, was performing. I caught their last piece where they rapped a version of someone’s graduation speech or something. Their main point was that you won’t “find yourself” someplace else. Now that I think about it, I might have missed what they were trying to say.

Headunderwater recently asked what was our favorite local band. It took me a while but I think this band might be the best from Kalamazoo. I certainly haven’t heard everyone, I’ve still yet to see the somewhat renown Glowfriends, and Small Brown Bike really isn’t from here. The most well known “current” band might be High Places (the lady went to WMU). I’m pretty sure Wildcatting is local and I really like them (playing this weekend). Ninth Street Bridge, Funktion, and a couple other bands I’ve seen live are fun but. yeah.

For having a reputation as being a bit of an artist enclave in Michigan, Kalamazoo’s scene is disappointing. People say it’s because Kraftbrau closed but who knows. It seems it used to be pretty healthy.
